The Sound of Croydon
(Samuel Coleridge-Taylor 150th Celebration)
Natalie Mitchell was lead curator and cultural producer on The Sound of Croydon (October 2025 - February 2026), an exhibition exploring the borough’s rich musical heritage, including the legacy of composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.
Mitchell devised the exhibition, leading its archival research and producing the interpretive materials and information panels that shaped its narrative framework. Alongside this, they developed and supported public programming and artist-led activity, connecting historical research with contemporary cultural practice.
As part of the project, Mitchell also led the collection of oral histories with prominent Black figures working in classical music today. This work forms part of an evolving archive that centres lived experience, intergenerational knowledge, and the ongoing presence of Black practitioners within the field.
