Autograph: Staging Self

2026

As part of Autograph's schools programme, I led Staging Self, a photography and moving image workshop developed in response to Nhu Xuan Hua: Of Walking on Fire.

Working with secondary school students, the workshop explored photography as a way of constructing memory, identity and personal narrative. After visiting the exhibition, participants created small-scale environments from cardboard, paper and found materials before photographing them as staged scenes.

Through collaborative making, students considered how images are built rather than simply captured; thinking about framing, perspective, colour and abstraction, and how meaning shifts through what is revealed or withheld. The workshop encouraged experimentation, interpretation and discussion, using photography as a way to reflect on personal experience and ways of seeing.
